Warm Saffron Apple Cider: A Simple Three-Ingredient Recipe
A warm mug of apple cider is an easy place to try saffron beyond tea. This simple recipe starts with a separate warm-water infusion, then combines it with gently warmed cider. Keep the ingredients minimal so you can taste the apple and saffron together.
Makes: 1 mug. Allow: about 15 minutes, including a 5–10-minute steep.
Ingredients
- 8–12 LAVIAAN saffron threads
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) warm water
- ¾ cup (180 ml) plain, pasteurized, nonalcoholic apple cider
Choose unspiced cider for this version. The recipe needs no added sugar; taste the finished drink before deciding whether you want to change its sweetness. Here, “cider” means an apple drink, not hard cider or apple cider vinegar.
How to make warm saffron apple cider
- Prepare the infusion. Put the saffron threads in a small heatproof cup and add the warm water. Let them steep for 5–10 minutes. This follows LAVIAAN’s current thread-preparation guidance.
- Warm the cider. While the saffron steeps, heat the apple cider gently in a small saucepan until warm. It does not need a rolling boil. Take the pan off the heat.
- Combine. Pour the saffron infusion through a fine strainer into a heatproof mug, then add the warmed cider. Stir gently.
- Taste and serve. Allow the drink to reach a comfortable sipping temperature. If the cider tastes too sweet or concentrated for you, stir in a little more warm water, tasting as you go.
Three small details that help
- Give the saffron its own steep. Set a timer before combining the liquids, so the infusion gets the full 5–10 minutes.
- Start with plain cider. A heavily spiced cider adds another set of flavors. Try the simple version first, then decide what you prefer.
- Judge by taste, not the photograph. Cider can be clear or cloudy and light or dark. Your finished mug may look different; its color alone is not a reason to keep adding saffron.
Common questions
Can I use apple juice instead?
Plain, pasteurized, nonalcoholic apple juice is a practical substitute in the same amount. It makes a different version of the drink, so taste before adding anything sweet.
Can I use saffron powder?
This recipe is written for threads. Follow the preparation amount on your powder’s current label; do not convert the thread count into a guessed spoonful of powder.
Do I have to strain it?
Straining gives the drink pictured here a smooth appearance without visible threads. Use a fine strainer when that is the finish you want.
Keep the next cup simple
Measure with a clean, dry utensil and close the saffron jar before warming any liquids. Our saffron storage guide has the short cupboard checklist.
